| Day In, Day Out is a digital
animation which simulates weather patterns, cycles of day and night, and seasonal and
climatic change. It is designed as a networked environment which integrates information
from weather sites on the web with the user’s own IP address (used to access e-mail
or the internet). The animation is launched from software contained on a CD-ROM. This
program directs the user’s PC to open up their browser to retrieve the most recent
weather report in their area. With this information, it generates a visual approximation
of what the weather looks like in the user’s area. What appears on the screen of your
personal computer is an artificial representation of the weather outside. Like watching
the movement of clouds, the animation evolves slowly, adjusting to changes in the weather
and the hour of day. The duration of the work is open-ended – the user determines the
length of time they spend watching it. The animation is on-going, without beginning or end
and without ever repeating itself. As a multi-user artwork, it can be viewed by several
different users at the same time and appears different depending on where and when they
are logged on. |
