P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to
present a site-specific installation by internationally renowned New
York sculptor Jene Highstein.

For P.S.1, Highstein creates a
site-specific pipe installation based on an ongoing series first
conceived in 1974 for the 112 Greene Street Gallery in New York. The
P.S.1 version consists of two seamless steel pipes, each 16 inches in
diameter and 30 feet long, which span the upper and lower halves of the
duplex gallery. Suspended from the gallery walls, the pipes hang seven
feet and 18 feet above the floor respectively.

Acting as three-dimensional lines, the
heavy and imposing cylinders pipes bisect the gallery to create new
spatial and visual perspectives. In Double Pipe Piece 1974/2003,
Highstein activates an empty environment, forging a physical
relationship between the viewer and the steel mass hung above.

Highstein has exhibited his work internationally since 1970, and was a
member of the Anarchitecture group. This group initiated in 1973, which
explored alternative ways to perceive architectural surroundings, and
included Gordon Matta-Clark and Laurie Anderson. Working in materials as
diverse as stone, cast iron, steel, glass, concrete, fabric, and
plaster, Highstein experiments with materials and scale, creating
monolithic sculptures. He recently completed a large collaborative work
in ice with the architect Steven Holl in Finish Lapland.

The exhibition is curated by P.S.1
Associate Curator Daniel Marzona and is made possible by the
