First Steps: Emerging Artists from Japan
4:30pm: Yuka Honda
On the occasion of the exhibition "First Steps: Emerging Artists
from Japan," this music event highlights the work of an emerging
New York-based Japanese musician, Yuka Honda. Honda came to New York
from Japan in the mid 1980's and has worked with many musicians. She
developed her style and musical skills on keyboards and then created
more advanced musical ideas using the sampler. Honda was a co-founder
of the popular band Cibo Matto, with Miho Hatori. The 1996 release of
the Cibo Matto's breakout album "Viva! La Woman" sampled
from funk and hardcore music. In 1999, their hit record
"Stereotype A" featured collaborations with Sean Lennon. Her
first solo release on John Zorn's Tzadik Records was "Memories
Are My Only Witness" (2002).
