"Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place" initiates a set of dialogues with women in Mexico City and New York City addressing political and social articulations of gender in the present moment. 

Two New York City-based artists with different cultural backgrounds--one German, one American--Andrea Geyer and Sharon Hayes engage, in their artistic practice, with discourses around gender representation and the interconnectedness of gender, culture and history.  In August 2000, both artists were invited to present their work at La Panaderia, an alternative art space in Mexico D.F.  Relocating their art-works in the context of Mexico City raised questions which led them to collaborate on the project "Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place."

Utilizing an interview structure "Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place" discusses cultural feminisms, historicization of the women's movement, gender categorizations, the role of education in the production of gender, the relation of queer theory to feminist theory, and the struggle for interpretative power within the contemporary political context of Mexico City and New York City. Structuring each conversation, Geyer and Hayes create a basic set of questions used in each interview to create a common platform.

Each interview includes three parties: the interviewer, the interviewee and the translator. Translating from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, information travels continually between the three positions. The video documentation of the interview shows only the image of the translator, reflecting a constant negotiation of terminology and interpretation, forgrounding the impact of translation on the production of knowledge and meaning.  The "struggle" of each translator signifies the problems raised in the translation of these discussions on gender both on the level of language and also on the level of culture and historical context.

The recorded dialogues from Mexico D.F. and New York accumulate a group of conversations with no overall statistical aim or resolving goal.  Rather it follows a  map of Geyer and Hayes' personal movements within the two cities as they've developed and researched the project itself. The piece begins with 16 interviews, which will be displayed simultaneously in a room, each on a separate video monitor.  The audio of the individual interviews plays simultaneously creating a sound-collage of voices in Spanish and English. The viewer, equipped with a set of headphones, is be able to plug in each "interview-station" for individual listening.  During the course of the exhibition Geyer and Hayes will continue to conduct interviews, expanding the horizon of the positions represented in the work.

"Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place inicia una sesión de dialogos con mujeres en la ciudades de México y Nueva York, discutiendo y articulando nociones politicas y sociales sobre el tema de género en la actualidad.

Al ser dos artistas que viven en la ciudad de Nueva York, con diferentes backgrounds culturales, uno Aleman el otro Estadounidense nos comprometemos con discursos que giran en torno a la representacion y conexión entre las ideas de género, cultura e historia. En Agosto del 2000, fuimos invitadas a presentar nuestro trabajo en La Panadería, un espacio alternativo en México D.F. Relocalizando nuestra obra en el contexto de la ciudad de México, surgieron cuestionamientos de los que se desprendió la propuesta de colaboración en el proyecto "Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place."

Utilizando una estructura de entrevista "Cambio de Lugar_Change of Place." discute sobre femenismo cultural, historia de movimientos de mujeres, categorizaciones de género, el rol de la educación en la producción de género, la relación de teoría "queer" y teoria feminista, y la lucha por el poder interpretativo dentro del contexto político contemporaneo en la ciudades de México y Nueva York. Estructurando cada conversación, usamos un grupo basico de preguntas en cada entrevista para crear una plataforma comun.

Cada entrevista consta de tres elementos: entrevistador, entrevistado y traductor. Traduciendo de Ingles a Castellano y de Castellano a Ingles, la información viaja continuamente entre estas tres posiciones. La documentación en video de las entrevistas muestra sólo la imagen del traductor, reflejando una negociación constante de terminología e interpretación, situando en primer plano el impacto de la traducción en la producción del conocimento y de significados. La "lucha" de cada traductor de estas discusiones sobre género muestra los problemas que surgen en la traducción, en los niveles de lenguaje al igual que en los niveles de cultura y contexto histórico.

Los dialogos grabados en México D.F. y en Nueva York acumulan un grupo de conversaciones sin propositos estadísticos o meta concluyente. Más bien siguen el mapa creado por nuestros movimientos personales dentro de estas dos ciudades, mientras desarollamos e investigamos el proyecto en si. Durante la exposición continuaremos conduciendo entrevistas, expandiendo el horizonte de posiciones representadas en el trabajo.
