Cosey Fanni Tutti was born in Hull, England in
1951. Tutti has produced music, video and multi-media artworks. She has contributed to
international art, music exhibitions, festivals, film and T.V. soundtracks. In 1976 she
co-founded Throbbing Gristle and the label Industrial music with Chris Carter, Peter
Christopherson and Gensis P-Orridge. In 1981 she began working with Chris Carter as CTI
and Chris & Cosey producing music and video.

Often working naked in her performance pieces, she investigated the world of sex
magazines, film , modeling and striptease from 1973 to 1984. Her experiences were brought
into her work as she explored the many levels of sex as it is perceived and presented as a
commercial product. She represented a much desired freedom for women to express themselves
sexually without guilt or preconceived ideas of "beauty." In 1994, the
composition of the CTI musical piece CHRONOMANIC brought together Cosey's work in all
fields: music, a reproduction of one of Cosey's encaustic paintings for the CD cover and a
short video commissioned for the Sonar festival.

In recent years, she has performed and exhibited her work at the First International
Female Artists Biennale in Stockholm (1995), at MoCA, Los Angeles (1998/99), and at the
Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2000).

“Everything has a history, if we investigate it then we have more of an understanding
of what we are dealing with. Confronted with the visual result of years of experiences we
are not always aware of what made this whole. It is important to have knowledge of the
fragile events that lead us to where we are now.”
