Uniform : Order and Disorder

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents Uniform: Order and Disorder, a multidisciplinary exhibition opening May 20, 2001 that showcases various expressions of the uniform through art, fashion, cinema, photo-journalism and pop culture.
Curated by Francesco Bonami, Maria Luisa Frisa and Stefano Tonchi, Uniform: Order and Disorder looks at how technical and formal military wear influences contemporary fashion and is metabolized in pop culture and is critically used in art. From textiles to advertising, from icon-laden clothing to symbolic images, and from comics to films, this expansive exhibition traces the path of the uniform from the immediate post-war period to today through some of its most emblematic figures. Works by 33 artists and 31 designers are included in the exhibition, which is installed by Italian architects Gruppo A12.
